Wild Ginger with Yellow Flowers

the leaves can be used for wrapping food. These flowers are pretty and come out in a very nice yellow shade.

found in secondary jungles where moisture is plentiful this plant has become quite a good garden plant today.

Perhaps someone has already been researching on its medicinal properties.

Hi Sarawkaiana,

I think it is a wild species of ginger (family-zingiberaceae) judging from the flowers. But I cant see the leaves clearly.

There are lots of wild ginger species in Swak. Have u heard of jerangau?

Dear Greenpot
What is jerangau? It must be a rare species or the name is something very new to me.

Thanks for the comments. What about daun long? What is its scientific name?

Don't be shy. You have a nice heart and a nice "voice: in your blog. When writing we are all conscious of our message and voice and audience.

My hubby claims that he is the better cook!!

I am an experimental cook and like to try different ingredients. Simple ingredients and simple flavourings form the basis of my cooking.

All the best to your writing and cooking. Regards to Mrs. BB and BH.

Sarawakiana,

Jerangau is a wild ginger species found in places like Bario. It belongs to the genus Bosenbergia.

Jerangau is medicinal and used by the Kelabits. There are two or three kind such as jerangau merah, etc. Heard that after you take the tuber/rhizome of Jerangau, chillies will not tast hot any mre for a period of time.

Daun Long could belong to the genus Zingiber (same genus as the ginger we use in cooking).
