Ah Tak's Noodles in Lutong Market

Every student of all races in Miri and Lutong knows that Ah Tak's noodles are the cheapest. He started selling noodles at 30 cents when he was a young man.

I think he should be well decorated by our government. He has served more people of all walks of life than any one in this part of the world....by making his noodles cheap. So in 30 years he has only increaswed his price from 30 cents to RM l.30.

Because Ah Tak sells at 1.30 his two neighbours also have to sell at that price.

Wrapped up in squares one does not even need to use chopsticks or spoons. Just bite through like a biscuit...I once had many of these packed for a trip to the ulu...by the time we reached Long Lama all the shops were closed and I was the angel who provied these treats as we drove into the Kayan settlement  of Long Bedian under the moon. How lovely was the cold noodles as we sat at the back of the pickups. A bit of dust was okay. We were hungry !!

By 11 a.m. only the packed noodles are left. Noodles or Kueh Tiaw...or Bee Hoon. Take it or leave it.

The Good Morning towel around the neck of the hawker...

These three stalls provide good service to young and old and especially the lower income group.

And for the housewives who are hard pressed for time a few packets of these noodles mean a lot of time saved. For fathers who need to redeem their status in the eyes of their children a few packets of these noodles go a long long way.

Hi Sunflower
I believe the Seria hawker stall is still there. Will go there and take some photos for you if they allow.

I frequent the Kehng Chiew Coffee Shop in KB where they sell good chicken rice and good coffee. The other one has good fish balls..

Well let you know more about them.

Thanks for visiting my blog. Cheers.

Ah Tak is a good man with a heart of gold. His rental is very minimal and he serves only two tables...he usually "sends" the noodles to his customers...and it is usually tah pao or take away in newspapers lined with transparent plastic. Not even the plastic containers...Some of my friends bring their containers to tah pao the soup kosong!!
Yeah...lots of charity in his business but he still makes money. May God bless him and his family.

In Kuching Laksa sarawak cost Rm5.00. Average price is Rm3.00 - RM5.00. Kam Pua mee in Sibu is still cheap.

Dear Jay
Kuching used to be a great place to eat. But now with car parking fees and increase in petrol price a lot of things have gone up...I hope prices will not go further up...Poor rakyat...are we becoming like the dynastic China in history when the rakyat did not like the government and did their own thing (banditry- tax evasion - ignorance of law - etc)The Emporor also wanted to take everything.

Hi
How nice to see Ah Tak's name in your posting. When we were young we depended so much on him for our breakfast and even lunch. We used to pay so little for the packets with the meat (60 sen) and my father would always get one or two free packets from Ah Tak who knew that we lost our mother to a accident near Kuala Baram.
He deserves a special big page !! Tell his story. Thanks.

Hi Justin
Sorry to hear about your mum's accident. It must have been very painful for all of you. Bless Ah Tak's good heart!!

the other day I asked for more veg. and onions. He gave without extra charge. Yes he deserves an award. The last time he raised his price to 1.30 was 2008!!
We should let him be in charge of our Oil Industry....just kidding.

Hi Wenn
for a long time we really appreciate the square noodle cake!! The natives love him especially because he is so good to them...

Yummy.

Sometimes when we bring home the noodles we turn them into soup and it is nice too.

I remember this! Its so cheap, its almost unbelievable. Only in Miri.

How does he do it? Either he is very content in earning a very small margin despite the price hike in almost everything in Malaysia or he's secretly putting the cost somewhere else. Or he's secretly a millionaire just giving out charity.

Ah Tak is secretly putting his money somewhere!

It is indeed unbelieveably cheap. but it is the packet mee that help him cut cost...and he sells more packets than the bowls.

May God bless him.

Hi
Does anyone know how to make the KLM? The flavor in North America is not the same.
Thank you

The respectable and memorable son of Lutong, Ah Tak full name is Lau Tak Wah (Cantonese), Liew Tek Hua 刘德华,born in 1050's is the classmate of the contributor of this comment, Lutong Chung Hua Primary School. Ah Tak was the only son in three successive generations selling noodle at Lutong Market. He succeeded the noodle stall from his dad Lau Chung not long after he finished Senior Cambridge Overseas Examination (Form Five) . He and his sisters have unselfishly and faithfully served the community all the days of his life. Surely, this could be esteemed as the spirit of Sarawakian "Wei Ren Ming Hu Wul", 为人民服务。
Ah Tak remained single all the days of his life. He never learnt to drive, but enjoy riding his bone shaker bicycle between Lutong and Miri, via the beach or the narrow bitumen road. Perhaps, one could still fine a dynamo at the front wheel of his bike!
At Tak was a great pen friend. He visited good number of his pen friends all around South East Asia. At Tak served as the Liaison Officer of his classmate all these decades. Whenever a classmate return from overseas he would arrange a reunion dinner. He never misess sending Christmas blessings and Chinese New Year greetings year after year.
Ah Tak will not only be remembered for his noodle, but also for who he is........ .
May At Tak rests in peace eternal, may his name be inscribed in the Book of Life. Amen.
While at Transition Class (Pre-form one) Ah Tak used to joined the scripture class in Chung Hua Primary school where he learnt to serve. He learnt in the Bible which quoted Jesus as saying, " ...whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, whoever wants to be first must be your slave-- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to give his life as ransom for many". At Tak was practising what Jesus said," If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him." ---by Evergreen Leaf - Perth
