A Birthday and a Former Student from Chung Hua School Sibu!!

1973 - I was a starry-eyed temporary teacher in Chung Hua School Sibu - glad to get a small posting and earn a bit of pocket money before I started a post graduate teacher's diploma course in Kuala Lumpur.

I had a lot going for me. A degree in hand - good health - and lots of happy friends who believed that the world was their oyster.

And becoming a teacher then was the best thing in the world too!! Most of my friends and I were drowned in our happiness. And we were not afraid or even fearful of being posted to any rural area in Sarawak. We were like the heroes and heroines of the Chinese kungfu legends - willing to fight and make peace -willing to right the wrongs. I was really into imparting of knowledge. (Ivy said I taught with great details....ahem)

My short teaching experience in Chung Hua School Sibu was great : good and helpful colleagues who were so sacrificial and highly moralled (except one)- good and admirable supporting staff who were earning extremely small salaries (RM200)- great and problemless students. Parents then were almost invisible.

So whenever I meet my "old students" from Chung Hua school I would be just so pleased! 40 years have gone by! And yet they will still be just those cute and innocent students who were eager to learn and become somebody. And you will never know when you will meet a former student.... This is one of the blessings one gets as a teacher. Last Wednesday I had a great surprise.....

My former Chung Hua school Form Two - student with another friend's young daughter. She was a sweet 14 year old then....Ivy's origin is also like mine - from Nan Chong Village. What a small world...and time has indeed collapsed like an accordion when we met again...and remembered those days and shared stories...

It is part of growing old for me - watching my own students becoming mothers of grown up children...who are now of marriageable age!!

LOvely birthday cake made by Catherine for Ivy-

Lovely mee sua for everyone celebrating Ivy's birthday!!

Happy Birthday Ivy.......Many Blessings from God.
