Farewell My Faithful Zoe

Zoe came to us about 9 years ago. She was born of a good mother and perhaps a stray male dog. One morning Snowie the lovely mother dog gave birth right in front of a neighbour's flat and we took Zoe to keep. The other siblings were given to other kind hearted people. Snowie the mother is still alive and well and has moved to another beautiful home with the owner.

Zoe has been good to us.

She guarded the fences like a good soldier. No fisherman fishing by the river would dare to pluck a single coconut from our trees.

At night she would be most alert. Friends claimed that she knew how to read car numbers. Whenever they came with their cars Zoe would not bark. But if they came with other cars Zoe would bark and would stand still at the gate ready to pounce. It was very funny the way she guarded the gate. She was more like a bull with the head down and scratching the sand.

Zoe never left the verandah. She would always be sunning herself in the afternoon. That was the time  I enjoyed having her around - sunbathing by the steps and I have always been very comforted by that. I shall really miss her breathing and occasional snore. You do get addicted to a pet who has been inconspicuous yet present around you.

I shall miss her small licks on my hands and her gentle ways of eating carefully from her bowl.

Someone once commented "Your Zoe has very good table manners!!"

Zoe was fierce as any bitch could be when having new puppies. She had given us lots of puppies and these puppies have been in popular demand. Many who know of Zoe would book her puppies even before she gave birth.  Strangely Zoe would always give birth to a large litter of 8!! This new batch of puppies have been orphaned all too soon.

At some point of time on Sunday someone must have slashed her belly. It was a four inch cut. The bleeding stopped when I applied some iodine. I thought that when she was cleaned and the wound was dry she would be alright knowing how strong dogs could be. She was actually walking around on Monday morning and had a good meal.

Did someone clobber her head too?

Her poor puppies tried to suckle from her cold body and I was so heartbroken and distressed at the sight.

I am sure dogs do go to heaven.

Zoe went to dog heaven where there are no idiots to slash her tummy. My WAI PO or PO DAI or NGIA MA would say the idiot would be reborn and have other idiots slash him a 100 fold.

9 years is a very old age for a dog. You took good care of her,

Dear Ann
I miss her so!
Yes I must be comforted by the words and beliefs of your Wai Po or Ngia ma...may the idiot be born with only one leg....or a half a stomach.

Thanks.

Hi Superman
Thanks for your kind words for Zoe. It is indeed pitiful to see the puppies . I pray that they will go to good homes in the next few days....

Once one of our dogs had some one (idiot)splash hot water on her side near her belly. We applied coconut oil. The wound festered with flies hovering on it. But the coconut oil worked. After a long time, the wound healed.

As for the puppies, did you feed them with ANG GEE GU NEE in a milk bottle with the rubber tits?

When I was in Primary school, our bitch had 9 puppies, one died making it 8. People came with Ang Gee Gu Nee to book the puppies. We made them up to feed the babies as 8 babies were too much for the bitch. We also fed the bitch. We were delighted to feed the puppies as humans would feed human babies. All too soon, the puppies were big enough to be given to those who gave us the condensed milk.

The Ang Gee Gu NEE in exchange for the puppy apparent was a townie Sibu style. The traditional San Ba Cantonese style was to give the bitch owner some katis of sugar,

What did the adopted puppies people give to you fro Zoe's pups?

Did you allow your kids to watch Zoe give birth?

My mum stopped us from watching, warning us the bitch would eat the pups if we did. But we did anyway, and when the bitch ate th placenta, we started to cry. We thought the bitch was eating the pups. We saw, one by one all 9 of them coming out. When mum came home, we denied we watched. She said, you must have, now one pup is dead. We were so guilty. But that was the best experience we had.

I am sure your mum knew that you went to peep at the puppies...Kids learn biology from birthing like that...I knew of a lecturer who was so underexposed she had never seen hens laying eggs!! Why won't the eggs get broken she suddenly asked....No my kids were not around to see Zoe giving birth...
