Airbrush Tatoos in BCF Sibu

While Miami Ink and L.A. Ink take the world by storm Sarawak Tattoo in its traditional ways make its mark on tourists who have read up about its exotic styles. In a quiet way Sarawak Traditional Tattooes have really make their mark on many people in the last and present centuries!!

Youth in particular are interested in something trendy. So the BCF booth promoting airbrush tattooing got quite a big following. I decided to drop by to take a few photos and enjoy the multi-racial crowd which happened to be both young and old. I blended in quite well actually. A friend got one for her ankle and she looked very trendy indeed...and happy that she had one...

A couple was willing to let me photograph their newly acquired temporary tattoo...

A template is used.

Airbrush the ink on....

Here's the whole pattern...

After removing another template here is a beautiful tattoo....

Sibu is changing.

Sunday Stills Challenge on August 31, 2009 by Ed

As any good photographer can tell you the subject, unless macro should be in the top or bottom third of your viewfinder or the right or left third. so this weeks challenge is to use the rule of thirds. Any subject will do, just make sure it is either in the top or bottom or left or right of the picture.

Example: if shooting the sky have the horizon at the bottom of the pic, if shooting a horse pic have it off to the right or left with a pasture filling the screen. It just takes practice since we all tend to center the subject.

This was what was taught about the rule of the thirds.

But I am a ching chai person, I don;t follow any rules. just aim and click. But for this last Sunday still, I happen to know what the challenge was for the day, and I was out taking photos, so I took some. Still I only took the hortizontal third, infact, it applies to vertical side. Something like don't centre all you objects.

Now you are still lost? Then just be ching Chai like me. I can't remember if Mr. Ho taught this during our school photography club.

We considered a person uncivilised if his arms, legs and necks are full of tatoos, usually found on the Ibans. Now we found a different world. The most well known persons would have tatoos all over the body. I could not find out which part of Angelina's body is without tatoooo.....

Dear Anonymous
Tatoos amongst the Ibans are symbols of higher social status and bravery etc. Amongst the many ritual ceremonies tatooing is both art and culture. Unfortunately many outside the Iban culture do not understand such sacred practices and either abuse it or discriminate against it. Amongst the Pacific Islanders face tatoo is indeed a person's identity. I understand that only the very virtuous and upright amongst some Taiwanese indigenous people are given the right to have special tatoos...Perhaps one day Tattoo and its
World Significance will be a university minor subject.

In New Zealand, the Maoris have traditional tattoo. Each culture has different values. Again, it seem your last commentor and I differ.

My bro in law is a Kelabit. Only VIPs have tattoos.

Mr Ho: I can't remember, he came back from USA when I was in Form 1, 1967.

I was in form 4 when he led the photography club.
he led a group of Sibu to Tokyo Expo cum his honeymoon.

After that, I don't remember.

Hi Ann
Tattoo is a great subject for many. And yet so many are still so ignorant about it. The Kayan women who have tattoos are of the upper class...I don't know much about the Kelabits though.

Regarding Mr. Ho.
After I came back to teach Mr. Ho also disappeared from Sibu!

I suppose we cannot find much about him nowadays. I heard that his sister just passed away. May be if I could find his other sister in Sibu I could find out more about this good family.

Interesting to know that he knew so much about photography and his Tokyo trip!!
