My Fried Kompia Lady of Miri

One admirable Foochow woman in Miri is this one. Do you recognise her?

She has single handedly brought up her children since moving to Miri about 20 years ago and making a
living out of selling things in a basket. Her means of transport? Her two legs she calls Bus No.11. She will walk from one shopping centre to another and from one road to another until she has sold her basketful of food. She will then walk back to her car which she parks in a no-payment parking lot in Merbau Garden to get another basketful. In this way for the last twenty years she earned enough to bring up her children. She has no idea where the father of her children is doing now.

This is the last of her fried kompia when she met me in Sin Lok Huen Coffee Shop near IBS College last week.

We would always have a short chat. Although I would like to talk to her longer I knew I could not keep her standing there...one of these days we must sit down for a nice lunch. She has a happy outlook and a grateful heart. She is also good in conversation and you would never be disappointed when communicating with her.

Wishing her the best of business fortunes!

You know how the Miri people used to say, Oh Dear! the Foochows are taking over.

Seriously, Foochows are good business people, good PR.

AHHHHH! why the deep fried Kompia???? I couldn't swallow a bite of it when I bought them in Kuching.
Please give me the old fashion Kompia. Besides for nostalgic reasons, the original kompia is better for your health. If the oil is not bad enough to clot up your veins.

Yes for many years the Mirians did not like the newcomers. And in order to blend in the Foochows spoke only Mandarin.

Deep fried kompia came only after KFC made its debut inSibu. I always like the original...fresh from the oven.
