Cinnamon or Kayu Manis from Kalimantan Barat

A lorry near us was carrying the largest consignment of cinnamon sticks I have ever seen in my life on the road to Pontianak!!

Kalimantan Barat is the world's largest producer of cinnamon a spice we enjoy in our food and beverages as well as desserts.

In the raw form they asre actually straight branches of the cinnamon tree. They are called Kayu Manis in the Malay language and Siang Pi in Chinese.

Ginger and tea is often good for a body that has gone too cold. Cinnamon and milo or coffee good for joints. In fact many Malay ladies add a stick of cinnamon to their tea too during the boiling stage.

BB - I have received lots of comments about a plant called kecepak which is good for joint pains. I have written about this plant before as a good local kitchen remedy for high cholesterol.

by the time they reach the super market, they will cost so much money.

I don't use it, the country bumpkin husband doesn't like exotic spices.

Dear Ann
Nice to hear from you!
The Dayaks of kalimantan plant a lot of these cinnamon trees...and they delight in their export trade. Naturally the wealth earned does not always go to the first producers!!

What about 5 spice - that the mainstay of Chinese cooking!!
