A Special Gold Coin Chocolate

Gold coin chocolate was quite a rave amongst children in Sibu in the 1950's-1960's. The little sweet shops in Raminway and Market Road were full of bottles of sweets and the gold coin cholocate. Boxes of chocolates could only be bought in higher end shops like Kim Guan Siang. So a doting mother could only buy one or two coins to satiate her children's raving for a nice chocolate treat.

Today these gold coin chocolates come in a nice little bag too.

Actually the history of gold coin chocolate goes back a long long way. Perhaps it started with a merchant who wanted to gain favour from an emperor. so he made little gold foil covers and put chocolate in them. This became a fashion over the years.

Later some companies started to make their own gold coin chocolate their their logos in them. And each Christmas or New Year these gold coins were given away to faithful employees and business associates and their children.

As a child I loved to get one of these chocolates in Sibu. And so did my siblings. We would however not eat them straightaway...just to enjoy having the chocolate in our possession was already a treat!! We called that future orientation..but it was awkward because the melting chocolate would mess up our handkerchiefs and pockets...

I got this nice present from my son for Christmas!! See how big it is...bigger than my palm...that's a really big coin!!

I hope all mothers will get a lovely present from your children... a simple gift like this No. l Mum...gold coin chocolate....so meaningful.

Ann...the chewy chocolate was cheap to make..not like today's expensive special brand ones...now if I can afford (both healthwise and pocket wise) I will have to be choosey and eat dark chocolate..may be with a bit of mint...but I am going to keep this gold coin for the time being...
