When we first arrived in Miri my children too used to beg me to take them to see the "cows in the fields". We did go but we never saw any in fact.
And recently we saw one lovely buffalo and just had to stop to take photos of him. (Do female buffaloes have horns?)
This mature guy is really well fed.
The horns are beautiful.
We waited for him to "pose".
It was hard to get a car alongside him and him near to the road....the whole series took 10 minutes and we almost stepped on a few droppings....because we got so excited...
Luckily we were not wearing red !!

Ah Ngao....well....we ladies can allo be matadors here because the bulls here are not trained to charge!!!! hahahaha
back in the early 60s when I was living off Race course road in Sibu, we often see old scrawny cattle being herded to be slaughtered. Mum said, no wonder beef is so tough.
The cattle had retired from working in the farm.
I am not very sure about the beef cattle in Sibu...but definitely the Sikh Temple had a few cows for their milk production company!! My Dad gave my mum fresh cow's milk each time she was pregnant and I remember the old Sikh coming to our house to deliver the milk on his bicycle.
And I so WANTED his milk jug (because that was the only one in Sibu)...I understand it had a built in cooling system...hahahahah may he cheated me. Because I asked "would the milk turn sour ?" cheeky me. Fresh milk from the cow was a luxury.
But then skeptical me later thought that any one could have sold reconstituted milk and have two old non-lactating cows in the back yard...hahahahahha. Now the Temple would sue me for saying that.

It was operated by our Primary School teacher miss what's her name? She had very skinny legs.
No cattle here. There was a well at the temple grounds, bits of rubbish, some one, ( we govt servant kids, spread a rumour that the temple keeper's son, our teacher's brother drowned there.) We were scared but not scared enough to steal their SUNG KAM.
This teacher, became a Roman catholic convert. She wanted to be a nun, but couldn't get her dad's blessing, so the nunnery rejected her. St Mary's church is very rich because she donated solid gold chalice. ( rumour by St Mary kids, must be gold, because during the mass, the priest locks them up.) Sadly, our teacher killed herself. I hope not jumping into the well.
I think it was Malay people who were driving the cattle, to go to the muslim butcher. There was a little market stall further inside. Used to cycle inside to buy our SUNG BOI.
buffalo meat is nice. you should try to eat it. especially the bbq way.

the Sikh temple is rather large...next to the Prison...we used to say that the Punjabis were very rich..only a handful of them and yet they could build a big temple...
No the Indian lady teacher was Miss Rajah...she was Tamil...I know her family members are very highly placed in Sarawak nowadays...if that was the lady teacher in Methodist Primary School. Sad story.

Regarding the cattle...yes the Muslims would have to slaughter according to Muslim rites...I remember that because my dad loved beef...and when he was alive he taught us to make steaks using a self fashioned flat wraught iron (?)plate...Dad was a good cook long before Jaimie Oliver....
Hi Anonymous...buffalo meat is available in the frozen state in Brunei although I would like to try fresh ones...hope one day I can try it..and bbq it too. Usually in the kampongs (Bisayas) who have lots of buffaloes the meat is either curried or stewed (rendang)...I heard these dishes are very nice.
If you have seen Mythbusters, they had an episode on the buffalo chasing the color red or something, it's false. They just chase you in any color if you pose any threat to them. The red color is just for show.
