The fruit is called Markisa in Malaysia. To some Chinese the fruit is called Bai Sen or "100 winnings" It is sometimes just called Siang Guo or Sweet Fruit.
In English it is called Passion Fruit.
There is a lot of symbolism attached to this fruit from the Catholic point of you. However many have forgotten the symbolism or many of us never knew the stories attached to the fruit. In the 16th century Roman Catholic priests said that some parts of the flower reminded them of the passion, suffering and death of Jesus Christ.
Look carefully at the picture, and you might be able to follow his explanation.
The Sarawak Wild Mini Passion flower |
To all my Christian friends...Happy Easter. May the suffering of Jesus 2000 years ago help you to renew your faith in Everlasting Life.
God keeps his promises.

I have to say this is no popojee. I should get some real popojee pictures to show you. I remember two kinds of popojee were abundance in Sungei Bidut in those days....
Popogee has this hairy thing. I didn't know passion fruit has it too.
i got this but i thought it was a weed
the second photo is popogee...but may be the fruit is not so obvious in the photo. May be your Sg. Bidut popopjee were bigger ones. The first photo is from google...thanks.
ann Popopjee has the hairy covering outside its fruit as a precaution or protective covering for its precious fruit. In fact at the early stages the passionfruit also has that outer covering.
Dear Bengbeng the Sarawak mini and wild passion fruit is an edible wild vegetable...but Chinese would consider it a weed.
Is that the popogee???
The second photo shows popogee which is growing on my fence...I harvest the popogee for stir fry..and someone told me the leaves can be eaten too...the green popogee is nice and crunchy when fried with ikan bilis and chilies.
CY,
you are a townee, and yet you eat all these San Ba things. When we visited my grandpa, we had to sneak around to eat these fruits. My mum said you will die.
What about the Singapore rhododendron? The black fruit is sweet and a bit bitter, it stains the teeth, and of course, mum was so "smart" she knew, and we never realised we had black teeth.

Dear Ann
Even though I am a townee I had the opportunities of visiting my relatives in Sg. Maaw and Sg. Aup...being in the Girl Guides also provided me with adventure opportunities....
hahahaha. ....I like the black teeth episode...remember always to wipe your mouth clean after stealing food...wise Chinese saying.
