Mongolian Blue Spot : An Asian Birthmark

When a Spanish friend gave birth to her first child in London, she was horrified because the baby's back and bottom had a huge black mark.

She started crying but when the Asian nurse came running to comfort her, she started telling the nurse about the black mark on the body. The Asian nurse was amused and calmly advised her not to worry.

My friend was married to an Asian man. And her baby has what is known as Mongolian blue spot.

It is a congenital birthmark, irregular in shape and can be found in any part of the new born baby. The mark will normally disappear after three to five years after birth. This birthmark was named after Mongoloians by ERwin Balz as it is prevalent among Asians, Polynesians, Native Americans and East Africans.
