Belimbing
Growing up in Kampong Nyabor in Sibu, I had my good share of kampong fruits like belimbing and different kinds of jambu or guava. We also ate a lot of Binatang green oranges. Occasionally we were given imported fruits like apples , pears and sunkist oranges.
The belimbing is actually a local variety of star fruit. We also had the regular star fruits, rambutans, jackfruits, mangoes etc.
The belimbing is very common and we could even be given some fresh ones from the trees whenever we asked friendly Malay ladies who were standing under their trees. We would cheerfully and politely minta for a handful.
And yes! we were given Ask and you shall receive. The Malay ladies were always very generous.
We would run home with the belimbing and wash them to eat with salt for our lunch or dinner.
At times like these we would wish we had hidden pockets like our Malay friends who wore baju kurung with hidden pockets.
We would always begged our tailors to make our uniform skirts with pockets!!
Pockets in our trousers or skirts are so useful.
