Kemunting

Children in Sarawak love the chew the stalk of the senduduk or kemunting. This is a wild flowering plant found in Sarawak. It has a beautiful purple flower and when the fruits are ripe they turn dark purple or black. The fruits are very tasty and make your mouth and teeth black.

It is also found in Southern and Southeastern Asia, from India to China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Philippines. It is also found in Peninsular Malaya and Sulawesi.

Known as Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, its common name is rose myrtle.

Some Chinese herbalists claim that chewing the stalks can ease stomach aches. Sometimes children also chew the stalks when they are hungry.
