The Evolution of a Sibu college 1901-2010 in pictures

Sibu has yet another college this week! Here's a short write-up on its evolution.

Sungei Merah settled by Foochow pioneers in 1901. They lived in attap roofed hostels like these in the beginning.

50 years later Sungei Merah had a 20th century airport....this is Sibu Airport. The foundations were laid by the blood and sweat of the Foochows and the Cantonese and the Heng Huas who settled here These poor subjugated people were forced to work by the Japanese to flatten the hills to make a run way. The British took over after the war and built this airport with Colonial Development Funds.
There were many communists elements behind the jungles of this old airport in the 1960's.Today many of these communists have rejoined the society and have become great entrepreneurs with government support.

SUPP developed a College called UCS .

UCS moved to its new premises - the site of demolished old Sibu Airport. Sungei Merah people and Sibu people were very excited about the development.

2002 - YB Lau Hui Chew announced that UCS was worth RM30 million and was producing 6000 graduates. Sibu people were said to be very excited and voted BN only.

2010 - UCS management handed over UCS to form Laila Taib Kolej for RM1.00. Some people said that this would bring in better development for Sibu.
