This lady is selling fruits opposite the Overseas Chinese Museum in Xiamen. She continues to use the Chen (or daching) with great skill. When I was young any woman using the Chen was considered very capable or skilful. Most women shied away from calculations especially mental arithmetic. But today we have these women who can do mental sums very quickly. I suppose Xiamen is near South East Asia so tropical fruits are commonly sold here.
The first time for me : small Li or Li zi. I would like some more please!!
Two young ladies making Sushi....No Chinese in 1937 would think of eating sushi....but today everything has changed and we are so open minded.
She is from one of the minority races and is thinking of busying some sushi. I talked to her as she looks so Sarawakian. She speaks Mandarin like any other Chinese.
Three older ladies enjoying an early spring evening. Note the knitting lady on the extreme right. This is a long pedestrian mall. I enjoyed walking here from one end to the other.
"Come buy king of fruits!!" shouts this fruit seller.
Pensive lady...she might be missing her children.....

By looking at your pictures, I have these impressions of those women, I think they are very hardworking people, tough & diligent. When old they know how to balance life, relax, have friends and stay healthy.
I hope I am correct :)

They have jack fruits too?
Hi Sunflower
Jackfruit/buah nangka are called King of Fruits in Chinese in Xiamen. I think they come from Thailand. It is a delicacy in Xiamen. And many of my Chinese friends love it...

Dear Isah
The women in China are very hardworking and they have energy to do all sorts of things..They have one driven goal - to have a comfortable old life...so they work hard when they are young...like the proverbial Ant...
