Sibu Recreation Club

Image may contain: house and outdoor

the Sibu Recreation Club was started by the Colonial officers and leading community leaders in the 50's.

Upstairs was an open space for dancing, with a small raised platform acting as the band stand and also for the PA system and microphone with loudspeakers.

Downstairs was also another open space with four mahjong tables, a bar (from where one could order coffee, tea, toasts, and alcholic drinks). If I am not mistaken the man who was given the tender was a Hainanese. He also had a steamer, in which he steamed siu muai and some other dim sum. He served his dim sum with chilli sauce, tomato sauce and mustard (upon request)

The SRC was where I had my first taste of English mustard.

On the side there two tennis courts where police officers and the colonial officers played tennis aftger office hours. They were all very well dressed in white shirts and shorts.  When the sun set, they came into the club to have their beer.

It must have been good to be a member of the SRC.
