Knife Sharpening Reflections

Although every Iban would have their own machete or parang (duku) for personal use like cutting, cleaning etc), it is their own duty to keep their possession clean. And the parang must be kept sharp at all times.

Parangs are usually made from the best of steel. The handle should always be checked and must not be loose. When the handle comes loose an expert would be called upon to fix it.

The parang is a very important personal possesion. It is also a protective equipment.

A man can spend hours sharpening his parang. He will usually do the sharpening for his wife and his children's parangs too.
