The Beacon Readers

Found some old books in a cupboard at home.

What memories!! I rediscover Rover, the Dog.

And Old Lob and his animals and of course Careful Hans.

All these are now out of print.

Throughout my primary school days, we went through a whole set of Beacon Readers. The school Headmaster Mr. Wong Kie Mee made sure that all the students, if possible in the English Department of the Primary School must read them.

They were all kept in the class library cupboard among other English books for reading during every English period. We were allowed to borrow one English book to take home to read each day. And the class monitor made a record.

the books were all well graded and there were several for Year Six which I found quite difficult to read! By year six I discovered the Sarawak Tribune and quite enjoyed the political news.

If you are familiar with Beacon Readers, you must have been educated in Mission Schools from 1950's to 70's.
