Bian Dan in Sibu

The Bian Dan or Carrying Pole was commonly used in Sibu. Brought over by the Chinese migrants, the carrying pole was very useful.

Men and women used it to carry almost everything from food, to products, and even children.

One of my most horrible memories was of a man who carried human waste using the bian dan early in the morning . I think this photo is of him, carrying his precious goods to the river boat for the vegetable growers of Sg. Bidut.

This photo is one of the older photos of the Market Road, overlooking the Cross Road. The market is at the right hand corner.
