In the early days of Malaysia, mothers were encouraged to take care of their children and had to get them vaccinated against Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough) / polio . At first all these were by injections, later they were given orally. In Sibu, the MCH or Mother and Child Health Clinic was situated at the Tudor Bulding. The Foochows called this clinic Woo Teck Hui (which was really a misnomer) The name got stuck because the first clinic for mothers and children were operated by the Methodist Church at their Epsworth League building near Masland Church. My aunts all remember having to go to the Woo Teck Hui when they were ill, when they were boarders at the Yuk Ing Girls' School before the Second World War. |
Many years later, the Tudor Building or Woo Teck Hui became a commercial building.
