Meranti Logs

WHITE MERANTI (Shorea bracteolata) and Red Meranti(Shorea siamensis)

The meranti is medium sized to very large tree up to 60 m tall. The trees have buttresses up to 3 m high. They are easily recognisable in the coastal hilly regions of Sarawak.

Sarawak is famous for the white meranti variety. Peninsular Malaysia also exports a lot of it.

The Red Meranti is also known as Red Lauan.

Most meranti trees are hollow inside. The logs look like big pencils with the lead taken out.

Meranti is a very hard wood and popular as a building material, making of plywood etc.
