The first girl to be enrolled in Sacred Heart School was Gertrude Wong. In this photo she was with her Form Three Classmates.
By the 1950's after Father Dekker left to run St. Joseph's in Miri, the Mill Hill fathers gave way to the De La Salle brothers who were missionary teachers and would be best for running of schools.
Mill Hill fathers were more for church work and evangelism.
In 1954, Sibu saw the arrival of Br Fridolin Gaughran (the Principal of SHS,Sibu), Br. Austin Moylan (Primary School) and Br. Justin Phelan.
In 1956 Brother Columba arrived in Sibu. He stayed until 1957.
In those days the school consisted of three wooden buildings, across the Lembangan River, from Channel Road, Sibu. There was a bell tower too . The bell rang out clear and loud and many people could tell the time following the bell. They would also catch their motor launch in time.
My uncle, Lau Pang Biu, was the cook for the boarders who were mainly Foochow boys from the villagers, while some Cantonese students came from Kanowit, and Sarikei. His sons did well in the school too. He must be the first Foochow cook to know how to make pork and chicken chops. But I may be wrong.
Years later we learned that the boys slept on the wooden floor and the boarding food was plain and simple. They did not pay much though for they could not afford more.
The first Cambridge School Certificate class was in 1955.
