First Sibu Foochow Girl to study in the United States : Student FARE

My fifth aunt was the first Foochow girl, born in Sibu to be selected to study in the USA. She went by freight boat. It was normal in the early 50's for American missionaries to come to Sarawak by ship. And it was probably what my grandfather thought was appropriate for her to sail by ship to the US. My aunt was a very studious and obedient girl.

It would have been too extravagant for her to travel by air. I believe she would never have asked for anything more from her father.

When she graduated, she returned to Sibu, by ship again and became the first woman DEAN of the Sibu Methodist Secondary School in 1958. It was after almost 2 decades when another woman was made Senior Assistant or Dean. Her achievement was not actually well received by her male counterparts, if you could imagine the work environment of those days.
