The best time to see the kampong was during the Raya when at night the houses would be all lit up to welcome the Raya and by day the houses would be all newly painted, with new plants in the yards.
But to me the best part was its back yard.
the back yard would be the river facing side and travellers could just come by the jetties and reach home!!
During high floods, the houses were all safe from water because they were all built on stilts!!
Kampong Hilir was almost completely razed by a huge fire not very long ago.
