Uncle Hii Wen Hui's favourite kuih was the yam cake which his wife my aunt can make very well.
She would buy just one yam or taro and in no time she had a tray of yam cake ready for him.
Yam cake is fairly easy to make but the bilong wo is not easy to find. It is hard to plant and it does not really grow well in the garden if the soil is not right.
Here is a good garden, full of the yam plants. After 5 months the taro would be ready to be pulled up. The gardener who has a good hand for yam growing can reap a good harvest and make a great profit.
Cross section of bilong yam
My aunt loved every one and she would make a large tray of yam cake whenever her nieces and nephews came to visit. She would use more dried prawns, more onions and more yam when she made the kuih.
My Uncle Wen Hui had good taste buds. Nothing but the best for him.
Love is making your husband's favourite snack at the right time.
He was always very cheerful when he had a plate of yam cake in front of him. Nothing else mattered.
