Edible Taro in Sibu

Most people are afraid to buy yam/taro as they dislike the itchiness they might get from cleaning and eat it.

Undercooked taro root and leaves can cause extremely unpleasant itching in your mouth.

Hence most housewives would wear rubber gloves when cleaning the taro.

A simple salt solution will get rid of the itchiness in the mouth and hands. Some people may suffer from the itchiness longer.

The most popular edible taro in Sibu is the Chinese Bilong Wo which fetches a very good price now, especially before Chinese New Year.

Foochows make an awesome steamed pudding using mashed taro and ingredients like dried prawns and pork fat. This kuih is a popular street food. Mashed taro is a banquet dish now as it is considered an auspicious dish.

Heads of communities often give celebration banquets and mashed taro is on the menu.
