the singing was excellent in the movie and for months the girls of Sibu would sing the songs or hum the tune. the movie was the first musical made in China in 1960. The screen play was written by Yu Qiao, based on a Guangxi legend. Wan qiu Huang continues to be a celebrity in China but few people hear of Ah Niu.

My maternal grandmother, a movie buff was all excited when she related the stories to all those who wanted to know more.
Although she was born in the 19th century she understood the struggle of the tenants and the evil deeds of the landlords.
