Disappearing Miri : Box Shops
When the Chinese started to arrive in Miri, some of them started to do a bit of food business. Their way of operating their business is by way of having a small box stall by the road side.
The Hokkiens believe in a good business strategy : "fresh food, cheap and by the road side", and this style of business led to many roadside stalls in Miri. In order to control the hygiene and method of trading, the Miri council had to issue licences. These licences could only be passed from father to son. This was also to control the total number of operators in Miri.
However over the years, the number of these "box shops" has dwindled.
