Sibu Tales : Grass Jelly (cincau)

Grass jelly or cincau is a good cooling dessert for many Fujian and Guangzhou people.

It is a kind of grass jelly made by boiling aged and slightly oxidized stalks and leaves of mesona chinensis, a member of  the mint family.

The jelly can be cut into cubes or other forms and then mixed with syrup to make a dessert drink.

Yeo's has a cincau (local Malaysian name for grass jelly) drink also.

It is good to prepare a milk concoction with pink grenadine. Cubes of black cincau added to this drink becomes quite attractive. It is a thirst quencher.

Because it is easy to make, many toufu sellers also make grass jelly for sale. A big piece can be bought for a mere 1 ringgit, making it one of the cheapest dessert ingredients in our society.

We love grass jelly as a cold dessert.
