Sarawakian Local Delights : Upa Lalis (Rattan Shoots)

Some of the best lalis come from the Skrang Valley. Good relatives will collect it from the jungle and send to loved ones in Niah or Miri.

Upa lalis or heart if rattan stem is a popular wild food among the Ibans. It is very bitter but boiling it for some time,the bitterness will be discarded with the water. It can be found in the jungle and it is also available in Native markets from time to time. Usually this rattan heart is snatched up very quickly because it is rare and well loved.

The soften lalis will be simply boiled in soup with a bit of salt and pepper added. It can also be used in sandwiches for a change.

Some fans love the upa lalis very much and believe in its curative features. It is known to be able to reduce problems related to diabetes , high cholesterol, high blood pressure etc.
