Jering (Archidendron pauciflorum) is a type of flowering tree in the pea family and is native to South East Asia. It is not a very tall tree and is quite often grown in gardens, public places. It is found in many low lying places of Sarawak.
The seeds are brown black in colour and are often sold in tamus. When opened the thick coat actually protects a milky to greenish kernel which most of the indigenous people will raw or as ulam with a dipping sauce.
The kernels can be boiled and then eaten with salt and freshly grated coconut.
The kernels can also be dried and ground into flour and crackers or emping (Bahasa Indonesia) can be made.
