Fish maw soup is popular as a banquet dish. It was once part of sharks' fin soup. Because of the campaign against eating of sharks fin, most people have turned to order fish maw soup when they invite guests for a celebration dinner, or for a festival.
Unfortunately the eating of fish maw has also driving some fish to extinction. This is because fish maw is actually the swim bladder of fish.
Famous swim bladders come from "the panda of the sea" or Vaquita (found in Gulf of Mexico) or totoaba which cost thousands of American dollars.
Good fish maws are sold by Traditional Chinese Medicine shops. some fishermen keep fish maws for themselves. Fish maws are dried in the sun before they are consumed.
