Tiong Kung Ping : Plant for the Next Generation

前人种菓树后人吃菓实。

My grandfather Tiong Kung Ping came to Sarawak with the Foochow Pioneer Leader, Wong Nai siong, when he was barely 18 years old.

He came armed with a firm Christia belief and strong Foochow values. One of the values he had was to plant fruit trees. He used to tell his children and grand children, "When you have land, plant something so that you can eat, plant fruit trees for the next generation and if you are hardworking, plant rice even...."

He had land for vegetable planting (for his big family) and rubber (he grew rich from rubber),papayas, pineapples, star fruit, guava, buah kundong, rambutans, mangosteens, bamboo and bananas (his favourite fruit).

He was most concerned about "having enough to eat" and the welfare of his fellow men. He loved seeing people who were hardworking, as he himself was a very hardworking man. Besides, he gave a lot of financiala and moral support to church ministers whom he could talk to easily, like Rev Yao shiao King and Rev Ho Siew Liong, his best friends.

He passed away in 1963 and left behind land and planted assets for his 7 sons, eldest grandson and his surviving wife.
