Sibu Tales : Dong Ngii /Lelabi/Soft shelled river tortoise

This river tortoise , considered a family pet, has been with this family for more than 10 years.

The Chinese especially and the indigenous people of Sarawak love to eat Softshell river tortoises which can be caught wild in rivers and streams.

soups made from river tortoises are supposed to be nutritious. Some Chinese even claim that these soups with the right herbs would give people long lives.

Turtle soups continue to be a delicacy for most people. However with laws governing wild life, it is getting harder to buy turtle meat now openly in the market. However if one happens to trap one, it would be considered a big fortune for the family. The enforcement officers might close an eye perhaps.
