According to Chinese beliefs, the Chinese radish is a detoxifying agent. this lovely root vegetable, known also as daikon is usually cooked with dried cuttlefish in soups.
Chinese radish is very easily grown and in fact many Foochow farmers would grow this as one of their first vegetables whenever they started a garden. It is also a very good vegetable to grow because if the harvest is good, it can be preserved for the rainy season when vegetables are hard to grow.
My mother grew a bit of Chinese radish in our backyard at the Brooke Drive house. And as a teacher in SEDAYA my students and I grew lots of radish for the Husbandry Club, and it was very memorable experience for me.
We ate a lot of salted radish during our childhood in Sibu. And mothers would try to find differet ways of cooking it. My own maternal grandmother loved preserving radish from her garden for the wet season. This was the olden day Foochow way of life - be pro active and store up enough food for the wet season or Landas.
