KUALA LUMPUR, Mon: Air quality in most areas throughout the country is deteriorating with only six areas recording good Air Pollutant Index (API) readings compared with 13 in the morning.

According to the Department of Environment's website, as of 5pm, 41 areas or 85 per cent recorded moderate API while only six areas recorded healthy air quality.

Samarahan in Sarawak recorded an unhealthy API reading of 105, the highest recorded in the country today.

Areas that recorded good readings were Bakar Arang (34), Langkawi (35) in Kedah; USM (36) in Penang; Kangar (38) in Perlis; Kota Baru (45) in Kelantan and Sandakan (50) in Sabah.

Among areas that had high moderate readings were Kuala Selangor (96) in Selangor; Melaka city (83); Tanjung Malim, Perak (83); Bintulu (87) and Miri (85) in Sarawak.



An API reading of 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 (moderate), 101-200 (unhealthy), 201-300 (very unhealthy) and above 300 (hazardous). -- BERNAMA
