Ginger is a commonly used culinary and medicinal herb. The knotty, beige plant is native to Asia, where it grows in tropical soil. For more than 2,000 years, the underground stems of the plant have been used to treat a host of ailments ranging from nausea and menstrual cramps to cold and flu symptoms. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, or NCCAM, reports that ginger is also used to treat joint and muscle pain, and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Common side effects include gas, stomach upset and bloating.
