The photo from Chua Chong Hian of Sibu shows Kwong Lee Bank flying the Union Jack. this photo could have been taken during a special occasion, probably the visit of the Duchess of Kent, in 1952. Or it was taken during the Queen's coronation in 1953.

Do you know why Bank Road was called Bank Road?
It is one of the shortest roads in Sibu. But it used to have two banks, the Kwong Lee Bank and the Wah Tat Bank.
Kwong Lee Bank which was founded in Kuching, in 1905, opened its first branch in Sibu in 1932. It must have been the first bank in Sibu as Wah Tat Bank and Hock Bank came later. 1929 to 1933 were Depression years and Sibu people suffered and were in financial difficulties.
Kwong Lee Bank opened its second branch in Sarawak in 1937 - in SArikei.
Its third branch in SArawak was in Bintangor, but it was only in 1978
(NB the Bank Guard was a Sikh.)
