16 Company - A Rajang Riverine Settlement
This is the map of the 16 Company Village, or Sek Luk Kongsi, from Wong Meng Lei's book on 24 Acres of Sibu.
Popular Chinese herbal shop owner, Tiong Nei Hung, was born in 16 Company and has good memories of every family in the village.
He remembers that each family had to dig trenches to make sure the drainage was good and very often, they had to raise the height of the road to ensure that their lives would not be impeded by the regular rise and fall of the river tides. It was hard work but every one was cooperative. The last of the villagers moved out by 1980.
The most famous man from this Foochow village must be Datuk Hii Yee Peng, a nice and sincere Methodist Foochow who gave back a lot to his community.
