Seniors from Yuk Ing School of Sibu

Image may contain: 9 people

This is the first batch of girls who graduated from Yuk Ing Girls school. My aunt Lily is the tallest girl , standing in the middle . It must have been a proud moment for her. She remained close to Mrs. Hoover to the end. Mrs. Hoover passed away in 1962, in Perth.

It was part of Mrs. Mary Hoover's syllabus - dress making. All girls could only graduate when they completed making their own graduation suite of white blouse and white trousers, as seen in this photo. My fifth Aunt, Grace is in this photo.

She went on to be the first Sibu, Foochow girl to graduate from US university in 1957, and to become the first woman DEAN of Methodist Secondary School. It was said that she decided to return to the US to study more. But then many women also said that she found the Sibu community a bit too chauvinistic to her liking. Those were the days!! I can totally understand.
