Brass Band and Foochow Wedding

No photo description available.

This is the wedding photo of my eldest cousin, Lau Kiing Tieng bringing home his bride.

the bridesmaid was Lau Kiing Leng. But I cannot remember who was the best man.

I was about 12 then so I can remember some of the nice things.

It was quite a grand wedding by village standard. A few pigs were slaughtered and lots of chickens were killed the best dish was the deep fried sandwich, Foochow style. More than 100 hardboiled eggs were shelled to make the first dish of Tai Ping Noodles and Eggs. Today this noodle is fried and garnished with 10 tai ping eggs.

A brass band accompanied the groom to the bride's home and then came back to the Ah Nang Chong house. Throughout the wedding lunch, the brass band played tunes loudly.

It was one way of merry making. Looking back, a band has always been part of our social arts and culture ...different era , different style, different era, different language even. I went through three languages, Chinese, English and Bahasa Malaysia..and later Bahasa Iban as an adult...and perhaps in the future Bahaha Indonesia in terms of music and songs.

The band members wore neckties, shoes, white shirts nd black trousers. And in those days, their hair was well oiled. they really looked smart.
