Miri Theatre

The Miri Theatre was the oldest theatres in Miri. There were two others, The Cathay and the Lutong.

Many good films were shown at the Miri Theatre. However there was one lady who frequented the theatre and she would bring an umbrella with her. Her usual seat was someone in the front, or at the 50 cents seats of those days.

The remarkable thing about her was that when it was raining in the movie, she would open her umbrella.

There was a man named Dol. He would either get cheap tickets and resold them when the movie of the day going to be a full house. Many students who walked from school in Tanjong or elswhere would be late to get the tickets. Dol would be there with a few tickets or he would be able to sneak the boys into the cinema.

Indian movies were very popular, even before the era of Bollywood. Many people enjoyed the cowboy movies , starring John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Burt Lancaster.

The cinema lost its glittering business to the advent of CDs and DVDs, and later Laser discs. finally the management sold the property to Tan Sri Ting Pek King, who built the Yu Lan Plaza in its place.

the romantic notion of going the movies became a thing of the past or some literary work in novels and other forms of fiction.
