Grandmother Wong was an extremely good cook. and excellent housekeeper.
According my aunt Chiew, Grandmother reared a lot of ducks, chickens and even goats in Pulau Kerto where our Ice Mill was located.
She was handpicked by my grandfather as his partner, and step mother to his 9 children. She gave birth to 8 more children with my grandfather and passed away at age 38 during the Japanese War.
Grandmother was very soft spoken and served Grandfather and my great grandparents well, all under one roof.
Her forte was the making of rice cakes or kuihs and she would single handedly grind rice to make rice flour early in the morning so that her cakes would be very fresh. Grandfather loved her cakes.
My young aunts would take a basketful of kuihs and sell them to the workers in the factory. One favourite kuih my aunt remembers is the Mee Turn Gui made by Grandmother. Today that special kuih is hard to find. but occasioally she can still get some from the Pasar Malam in Sibu.
Over the years Grandma made some money for household expenses and saved some money for herself to buy some gold ornaments. That was the way it was. Saving money to buy some gold ornaments and leaving them to daughters. Praise God for such careful and thoughtful mothers.
Duck and chicken essences were often steamed for Grandpa once a week. My Aunt Chiew used to tell us that ducks and chickens seemed to taste so much better in those days, and the aroma of duck or chicken cooking in the kitchen would overwhelm the whole house!!
My grandfather was a lucky man.
