Actually it is not kown to many that many of these fishing boats are owned by Foochows of Miri. They are the boat owners and may not be the ones going out to sea. They have employed trusted workers to do the fishing for them while they stay on shore to do a second job, or to operate the fish selling business.
There are a few workers on the boat, living happily on the boat as well as onshore. Times can be dangerous when out in the sea only with radio contact. Handphones today are most useful.
So far, very few boats and lives have been lost. South China Sea has been a good place to fish and a safe haven.
The Piasau Fish Market is a good market for their fish and the Miri River provides good rest for the boats.
