Does the word SATAY really originate from the Chinese term of Sar Deh (3 pieces)? Chinese used to slice pork very thinly and sold them in skewers. They were originally called Chuan Chuan Rou.
The Hokkiens probably as a joke started calling them Sar Deh....It ended up as SATAY.
May be it is just a legend.

Satay is a popular dish among the Chinese during CNY.
The older generation Foochows did not approve of eating satay because of the dangers of eating heaty food, and grilled food. Many Foochows did develop a lot of mouth ulcers after eating satay or any other grilled food, that even the popular headman, my grand uncle, Lau Kah Tii advised fellow Foochows not to eat satay. He was probably very aware of the dangers of consuming food which was over charred and over grilled.
According to my mother, he was a man ahead of his time. " It's long been known that just over-heating, let alone burning, some foods can lead to the formation of compounds linked to cancer. These include heterocyclic amines and so-called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can lead to fried or smoked foods posing a health risk." (www.sciencefocus.com)
