This inviting, tropical scene is no longer found in Miri. In the 1990's the last of the tables were taken away and the huts pulled down to make way for Modernization of Miri. New development took place and huge complex of condominiums was built next to the old open air market. And a few years later more buildings were erected on its very site.
The Brighton Open Air Market was the best Night Scene of Miri for more than 40 years. A few hawkers supported their children , educated them and some even migrated overseas!!

Satay here was sold by several vendors. And we knew who we wanted to buy from.
It was awesome we could order both halal and non halal food from the vendors without any social or religious restrictions. Every one operated in this excellent open air market famous for its diverse culture and different culinary arts. This old atmosphere of muhibbah can never be replicated in Miri today.

Some vendors became famous for their chendol, satay and special coconut drinks.
The ikan bakar of Miri must have started here.
And perhaps the smoke house idea too. Now Smoke House (bbq pork) concept is found all over Sarawak.
