Good Wife and Chicken Essence

My grandfather worked very hard every day. In fact he was quite a workaholic.

When the family lived in Binatang, Mee Ann Rice and Sawmill, he worked doubly hard because he his children were growing up and he already had a daughter in law in the family.

It was more mouths to feed. His padi fields had been producing in Meradong and his only brother Kung Eng was looking after the farm and the vegetable gardens before the war.

A dutiful wife would always make sure that the husband had his snack at about 3 pm. So Grandmother Wong, according to a family story, prepared chicken essence, steamed from one whole kampong chicken. She had asked her eldest daughter to bring the essence to the workshop.

Grandfather being a very stern man, with very fixed ideas about eating, sent back the chicken essence and said that he would have it at dinner time. Was it also because he did not wish to enjoy his chicken

essence in front of his employees?

This anecdote only shows that my grandfather was very professional in his attitude towards work ethics. He won't even spend a bit of time to rest and enjoy a precious Foochow Chicken essence in the presence of his daughter!
