Whisky Sir?

During the Colonial  era in Sibu, many men and women enjoyed attending cocktail parties at the Sibu Recreation Club.

It is interesting how well versed the Foochow men were when it came to the choice of alcohol. In those days, wines were not yet popular. So it was basically brandy and whisky.

According to my father, whisky was the preferred drink.

Besides they were well dressed too when they attended the parties, in bow ties and neckties to boot!!

There were quite a number of official parties in those days. First of all there was the New Year Eve Cocktail organized by the Resident to ring in the new year. Queen Elizabeth's Birthday was celebrated with quite a bit of merry making. A few official visits to Sibu by the Governor and the Governor General, Malcolm MacDonald called for cocktails.

The local band would play and the ladies and the gentlemen would take to the floor.
