The Foochows are very frugal people and the men would always get a very short hair cut to last two or three months if possible.
Their favourite cut was called the Hai Gung Tau or the Navy Hairstyle.
An instruction could be like this "Cut well above the ears, leaving the sides well shaven, cut the hair at the back as high as possible. Get the front well thinned and flat and as short as possible."
An American Peace Corp volunteer teacher in SMK Limbang went to get his first hair cut with a Foochow barber and gave his instruction, " cut just a bit off from the sides and cut just a little off at the back, leave the front long."
The Foochow barber nodded his head and did his usual. The American Peace Corps had a Foochow hair cut and asked for two days' leave from the Principal. In his opinion, the shape of his head just could not take a Foochow hair cut.
