There were a few memorable dinners organized by Foochow hosts in Fujian when I was one of those Overseas Foochow Researchers visiting Fuzhou City and Putien.
With letters of introduction from the Malaysian side we were very welcome by our hosts. Doors were opened when the local authorities picked up a phone, so to speak.
Besides helping us to meet local writers and historians, we were also provided with supporting staff who accompanied us from time to time. One or two hosts even provided cars for us but we had our own contracted coaches which helped saved a lot of time.
For example, when connected Curator Bao, a foremost historian and media personality, gave us a banquet in a an exquisite restaurant so that he could introduce the best of the dishes from his area. We we were also given a personal tour of the Folk Museum which he personally designed and funded!! It was really impressive.
The international relationship and connections established by the Chinese local government and overseas Chinese associations is awesomely impressive.
I am glad Wong Meng Lei brought us to Fujian for the research of Sibu Foochow History and its connections with Fuzhou and various Foochow organizations in China. There is so much to learn.
